Good lighting turns a pool from a daytime feature into a nighttime centerpiece — and modern options are efficient enough to run guilt-free. Here’s how to think about pool lighting, from the basic technology to design touches that make a backyard glow.

LED is the standard now

LED pool lights have replaced older incandescent and fiber-optic systems for good reason: they use a fraction of the energy, last for years, and come in both crisp white and full color. A single modern nicheless LED can light a residential pool beautifully, and color-changing models shift hue and run preset light shows on command.

White vs. color

  • White LED — clean, bright, and timeless; ideal if you want the water to look like water.
  • Color-changing LED — set a calm blue for everyday evenings or fire up a vivid scene for a party. Most integrate with automation so you can change it from your phone.

Layering light beyond the pool

The best-looking backyards don’t stop at the pool light. Layering creates depth and safety:

  • Water features lit from within — bubblers, sheer descents, and spillways come alive at night.
  • Step and bench lights for safe footing after dark.
  • Landscape and deck lighting to extend the scene past the water’s edge.
  • Fire features — fire bowls and fire-and-water combinations add warmth and drama.

Efficiency and safety

LEDs keep operating costs negligible, and on automation you can schedule them so nothing runs longer than needed. Pool lighting is low-voltage and must be installed with proper bonding and GFCI protection — this is licensed-electrical work, not a weekend project. Every CraftYourPool build handles the wiring to code.

Design it in from the start

Lighting is far easier and cheaper to do during construction than to retrofit. When we render your pool in 3D, we plan the lighting scheme alongside the shape and features — so you can see the night view before we ever break ground. Browse finished examples in our design gallery.

Planning your lighting layout

Start with the main pool light (or lights, for a larger pool) to wash the water with even color. Then add accents: step and bench lights for safe footing, lights inside water features so they glow at night, and landscape lighting to extend the scene past the deck. The goal is layers — a single harsh light flattens the look; layered light gives depth.

Color and automation scenes

Color-changing LEDs let you set a calm blue for everyday evenings and a vivid scene for a party — and on automation you can save "scenes" that set the pool, spa, and feature lights together with one tap. Fire bowls and fire-and-water features add warmth and drama that photographs beautifully.

Lighting safety and maintenance

Pool lighting is low-voltage and must be installed with proper bonding and GFCI protection — it's licensed electrical work, not a DIY job. Modern nicheless LEDs last for years and are easy to service. Because lighting is far cheaper to run conduit for during construction than to retrofit, we plan the full scheme when we design your pool in 3D.

Frequently asked questions

Are LED pool lights worth it?

Yes — LEDs use a fraction of the energy of old lights, last for years, and offer both crisp white and full color. They're the standard for new builds.

Can I change my pool light colors from my phone?

With color-changing LEDs on an automation system, yes — set scenes for everyday evenings or parties and control them from an app.

Is it cheaper to add lighting during construction?

Much cheaper. Running conduit is easy during the build and expensive to retrofit, so we plan the full lighting scheme when we design your pool in 3D.
